The vast majority of gay Madrid’s excellent nightlife is situated in the Chueca gayborhood. Here, you can find a gay establishment for every taste and every time of the day or night. Amongst the local favourites there’s Gris for a cool indie rock vibe, D’Mystic for a laid-back lounge, and Museo Chicote, a 1930s cocktail bar. LL Bar puts on a popular drag show every night between 11:30 and midnight, while La Kama is a popular spot for transitioning from relaxed drinks to full-on clubbing. There are even some gay cafes that open for breakfast and stay open well into the afternoon.
Insider Tip
Most Spanish people don’t sit down to have dinner until 10 pm at least, meaning they don’t start going out until after midnight. A good side effect of this is that plenty of bars offer happy hours with 2 for 1 drinks before 11, which seems unusually generous for many tourists.
All the bars listed here are in the Chueca gayborhood, so bar-hopping is easy. You couldn’t possibly visit them all in one night, so consider staying for a long weekend.
It’s all about wine in Madrid. Sangria, of course, is the national drink, but try to get your hands on Tinto de Verano, it’s a refreshing summer drink made from red wine mixed with lemon soda.

Prima’s Bar in the Chueca gayborhood is a chilled-out place to meet new friends and enjoy a fun night out. Thursday night is bingo night, and every Saturday there’s a drag show at 10.30 pm. The crowd is generally mixed, attracting gay men of various ages looking for a pre-clubbing venue.
Prima’s Bar is open Thursdays from 10:30 pm until 3 am, Fridays from 9:30 pm until 3.30 am, and Saturdays from 7:30 pm until 3.30 am. It’s closed Sunday to Wednesday.

LaKama Cafe is a vibrant gay cafe and cocktail lounge located in the heart of Madrid’s Chueca gayborhood. The mix of diffused lighting and a tropical decor makes it a unique spot for both daytime and evening visits. The cafe serves a variety of tropical cocktails, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages, along with breakfast, brunch, and light meals such as focaccia and tuna toast. As the cafe is spread over two levels, there are plenty of seats, and the upstairs balcony is a prime spot for people-watching.

Bears Bar is open six days a week from 7 pm. Tuesdays to Thursdays and Sundays, it closes at 2:30 am and 3.30 am Fridays and Saturdays.

Sixta Bar in the La Latina neighbourhood, south of Chueca, is often described as having a continuous Sunday afternoon vibe. It’s a great spot for enjoying specialty drinks and socializing. Barba is the Spanish word for beard. Barbanarama in the Chueca gayborhood is a bar for bears with beards. However, everyone is welcome and will enjoy the fun vibe here. The bar has TV screens showing Drag Race videos and plays a mix of international and Spanish musichosts and hosts regular drag shows. The crowd is a mix of bears and cubs from 20 up.
