Most of the nightlife of gay Barcelona is concentrated in the Gaixample. It is not an exclusively gay area, but a large portion of the businesses are gay and it is quite easy to figure out which ones. It is possible to spend a great evening just visiting bars at random, but a few locations to watch out for include Moeem, GinGin Bar, and Boys Bar. The latter is one of the few bars in the city with a dedicated dark room for cruising.
Although gay Barcelona is still very much focused in Eixample, a smaller grouping of gay bars and venues has developed in El Raval, Barcelona’s seedy yet emerging district. This includes Lo de Carmen, a friendly bar dedicated to drag acts and everything 80s, La Casa de la Pradera, and Madame Jasmine. The bars in this area provide a more low-key and relaxed alternative to the Gaixample crowd, ideal if you are looking to meet some new people over beers rather than dance the night away on a sweaty muscle-filled dancefloor.
Insider Tip
Most of Barcelona’s gay bars start late, primarily because everyone eats dinner around 9 pm, then heads to the bars by 10 pm. The peak hours are from 11 pm until 2 am.
The Eixample gayborhood is where most of Barcelona’s gay bars are. There are way too many to bar-hop in one night, so be sure to stay 2–3 nights to experience it all.
Barcelona’s drinks scene is very traditional (cava, vermut) but open to innovation (modern sangria, craft cocktails). For a local experience, though, prioritize vermut rituals or cava tastings over touristy sangria.
